Niche Down, or Not

This issue brings you clarity on niching, dope website animations, useful apps and other cool stuff related to design or web3.

The decision to niche down or not is a pretty important one because the consequences can be either positive or negative depending on how you do it. Let's first answer the question, do you actually need to niche down to be successful?

And the short answer is definitely not. But at the same time, there are obvious benefits to doing so. So we'll talk about both. First off, by niching down, you can automatically cut out a lot of your competition.

With that said, it’s important to differentiate yourself in one way, shape, or form. And while there are many ways to do this, owning a particular niche is one of the most effective ways of doing it.

Increased Efficiency

You can also have a massive opportunity to increase efficiencies when you work with one particular type of client. Let's imagine for the moment that you run a project or services targeting a specific niche, let's say gyms, or maybe it's even a sub-niche of gyms, which is with the, let's say, CrossFit gyms.

Every asset that you create for one gym can be repurposed for another. Again, in one way, shape, or form, instead of recreating the wheel every time. This ultimately allows you to get way more work done far more quickly and take on more clients.

You could, over time, generate an enormous library of assets that require minimal tweaking in order to apply them to a brand or new client. This takes a product that service really to the next level. But this level of efficiency can only be achieved when you niche down.

What Did I Do?

First I niched down, then I didn't, then I did again. When I started, my first niche was Smart Home projects, and that lasted a few years. After that, I had a phase where I was trying to build a more impressive portfolio and took pretty much all clients.

Over time, I would say that I've definitely fallen into a bit of a niche again. Although it wasn't by design or by choice, it's just the communities in which I spent the most time, which for me is Web3.

If you do have a particular passion, which many of you do, that you're obsessed with or they're just passionate about, I'd say go for it. But if you're on the fence, start broad, and figure it out as you go along.
